San Francisco is a vibrant and diverse metropolis brimming with culture, history, and endless activities to explore. Whether you are visiting for your first time, or a seasoned local, there is always something new and exciting to discover in the 415. Here is a curated list of some of the best things to do in San Francisco for tourists and locals alike.
Landmarks and Outdoor Adventures
1.Golden Gate Bridge: This historical landmark is absolutely worth the hype. There is nothing quite like walking or biking across the Golden Gate Bridge on a sunny OR a foggy day. It has a gorgeous view of both the ocean and The City as well as a magnificent look at the famous Alcatraz.
2. Golden Gate Park: Possibly one of my personal favorite areas in SF, Golden Gate Park takes you away from the hustle and noise of the city and places you in the middle of excellent greenery. I love the Japanese Tea Garden. It is an absolutely gorgeous area and an excellent place to go and clear your mind and look at some Koi fish. Another great area not far from the tea garden is the botanical garden. You can spend hours walking around the botanical garden looking at plants and massive trees from all over the world. Both the botanical garden and Japanese tea garden are free for those with a local San Francisco ID. I haven’t even mentioned the two museums located in the middle of Golden Gate Park, the de Young Museum, and California of Academy of Sciences, which are both excellent museum options, since you’re already in the area!
3. Presidio: Discover miles of hiking trails, picturesque picnic spots, and stunning vistas in this former military base turned national park. Visit the Walt Disney Family Museum, explore historic forts, or simply relax and take in the breathtaking views of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Culture and History
1. Chinatown: Another one of my favorite areas in San Francisco, Chinatown has some of the most amazing food you will every eat in your life (personally, I reccomend the Dim Sum). There are some awesome shops throughout Chinatown and some great food markets if you are wanting to try new things in the kitchen. Chinatown often has street performances featuring members of the community. There is always something great happening in Chinatown and it is a must for anyone new or local.
2. The Castro: Celebrate LGBTQ+ history and culture in the heart of San Francisco’s gay village. Explore its vibrant nightlife, visit the historic Castro Theatre, and pay homage to LGBTQ+ icons at the Rainbow Honor Walk.
3. Mission District: Experience the eclectic mix of cultures in this vibrant neighborhood known for its colorful murals, trendy boutiques, and diverse culinary scene. Don’t miss a chance to taste authentic Mexican cuisine and explore the famous Clarion Alley murals.
Arts and Entertainment
1. SFMOMA: Immerse yourself in a world of contemporary art at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Explore its vast collection of masterpieces by renowned artists such as Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, and Jackson Pollock.
2. Theater District: Catch a Broadway-caliber show or a cutting-edge performance at one of San Francisco’s acclaimed theaters, such as the Orpheum Theatre or the Curran Theatre.
3. Live Music Venues: Experience the vibrant music scene of San Francisco at iconic venues like The Fillmore, The Independent, or Slim’s. Whether you’re into rock, jazz, or electronic music, there’s a venue catering to every musical taste.
The best part about all of these fun activities is that Barbary Coast is located centrally, that way you can stop off here, smoke some our excellent weed in our lounge, and the go off on your adventure
